133 KCPE candidates awarded wrong marks - KNEC

KNEC said it received queries from candidates with low marks in some of the subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has admitted that 133 candidates were awarded wrong marks in some subjects in the recently released 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams results.

KNEC CEO David Njengere said received appeals over some errors in results obtained through the short code 40054 that was provided by the Ministry of Education.

He clarified that the error disclosed was due to configuration issues, he however stated that KNEC contacted the SMS service provider and the error on the text message was immediately resolved.

KNEC said it received queries from candidates with low marks in some of the subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili.

“KNEC has reviewed all the appeals and found that there were 133 candidates affected. These cases have all been addressed and results for the affected candidates updated appropriately,” Njengere said.

The CEO also revealed that results for some candidates were misaligned and marks and grades in Kiswahili placed in the Kenyan Sign Language section.

He further said there were cases where grades in Science and Social Studies and Religious Education were truncated incorrectly and were missing the plus (+) and minus (-) signs as expected.

The Ministry of Education released the 2023 KCPE examination results for 1,406,557 on Wednesday where the top candidate scored 428 marks.
